Don’t kid yourself, this industry is fucked up. Its antics make good people bad and bad people unbearable for the rest of civilization.  Yes, we make more money than the majority of the country – but we’ve paid for that privilege by sacrificing our social skills and tolerance for every day people.

Although many of us refuse to admit it, we’ve become snobs who now view the general public as the other side of the tracks.  The job calls for long hours and extensive nights out, so the  bulk our time is spent with shallow, self centered, egotistical douche bags… You don’t want to look down on everyday people, but it it happens. Sadly I realized this was happening to me last night after I took my kids to dinner (at the restaurant of their choice) to celebrate the entry of my son’s drawing into the elementary school art show.  The kids picked Friendly’s.

Ever been to Friendly’s?  If by some small chance your answer is no, then good for you and do you yourself a favor and never go.  Now that you’ve grown accustomed to eating in restaurants like Nobu, Jean Georges and those high-end steak houses that wait on us hand and foot, it’s tough to walk into fried food America and have some Guatemalan mother of twelve, who can barely fit her Jim Dandy ass between the tables, wait on you.    It’s always the same.  Once you sit down the first thing you need to do out of necessity is ask your overweight chocolate sauce stained waitress to go get a rag and wipe all the sticky shit off the table left by the farm animals that were there before you.  God forbid you drop something under the table… Don’t you dare stick your arm under there! Consider it gone forever and lost in the sea of crusted mac and cheese, old french fries, dirty needles and god only knows what else is growing.

I have no patience and it’s being spoiled on Wall Street that made me this way.   I look across the table and there are my kids smiling ear to ear, doing the happy ice cream dance and scraping the last bits of their sundaes from the bottom of their glasses.  …”I love you guys, but somebody bring me the fucking check!”

Even after you’re done clogging your arteries, you can’t get out.  It’s like a roach motel.  Before you leave, you need to spend ten minutes waiting by the register for some other beefy broad with Rocky Road crusted on her elbow to acknowledge your presence just so you can get $2 worth of quarters for the Claw machine.   I’d like to get my hands the criminal who designed that fucking thing.  This guy can’t possibly have children and if he does he’s got one twisted sense of humor.

The machine is so obnoxious – it’s the size of a Volkswagon, covered in bright lights, plays circus music and to a child looks like Christmas morning itself.  And for just 4 quarters your child gets to operate a robotic arm and experience disappointment after fucking disappointment while the shit prizes fall out of its limp palsy ridden metallic fingers.  If you’ve got more than one child, pray the first doesn’t muster up a miracle.  Cause if he does you could easily double what you  just spent on dinner trying to do it again.

Wait!  You’re not done yet.  Don’t forget to ask for that balloon before you go…  no, not that one… it’s got to be the blue balloon.  Now I don’t know if it’s all the french fry grease or what, but 2 out of 3 times that fucking balloon string slips out of my kids hand before we even get to the car.  Then I have to listen to him cry for an hour while we watch the god damned thing disappear into outer space.

Relishing the little things,

-Dopey

When i grew up, the names of the hair net wearing waitresses were Muriel, and Patsy. Now, Neequa, Yourine, Shaquanda. And why the heck do I have to pay for 200 years of slavery in every visit. Ya got a brut huh in da house y’all. And ever think why you’re nice to the peeps that work there? Fear, pure fear. Of the following happening to you. Forget having you half pound of cardiac arrest spit on. How about the guy we know that worked a summer taking shit from customers, only to take the HUGE sheet of sunburn skin, carefully peeled of his back, and saved just for that one special jackoff customer that we all have seen or even been. So go forth Wall Street know it all arrogant Cirque eating expense padding chest thumping light tapper. Indeed, it might have been you. And that well crafted plan was from a guy named Justin. Imagine what Thalonquish had cooked up fo yo mouth watering ass! Have a nice day.

Me, I prefer to have my half pound burger “sans skin”. He tells me it melted so beautifully he was sad there weren’t camera phones back then or he’d have put the picture on the right side of the menu like the old Hojos. As if you didn’t know what a burger, fries, wit extra skin looked like fool.

Here’s a funny one for the fellas. I guess the lawyers aren’t quite the a-holes these are, but still a funny for today.

A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy. He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he is sure that he has a better education.

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the deputy’s expense…deputy says, “License and registration, please.”

    Lawyer says, “What for?”

Deputy says, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign …”

Lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”

Deputy says, “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration, please.”

    Lawyer says, “What’s the difference?”

Deputy says, “The difference is, you have to come to a complete stop, that’s the law. License and registration, please!”

Lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration and you give me the ticket, if not you let me go and no ticket.”

Deputy says, “Exit your vehicle, sir.” At this point, the deputy takes off his gloves and starts slapping the lawyer and says, “Do you want me to stop or just slow down?”

    True story from Friendly’s…

So back in high school, my buddies and I had a serious case of the munchies following a party. We roll into the Friendly’s on the corner of rt. 28 in Stoneham, MA. We knew two girls that worked there as waitresses. Neither were present on this great night. This place was exactly like Dopey described above except for the fact that the manager did not give a F@#$.

We’d been sitting at a table for about 5-7 minutes and no one had come over to serve us. So my buddy says f— this, I’m getting some ice cream. He asks us what flavors we want and then proceeds to walk into the kitchen in search of ice cream.

While my friend was scooping out our ice cream, the manager walked up to him and asked him what the hell he thinks he is doing. My buddy stopped, looked at him and said “this place sucks, your service sucks, so I’m doing this myself.” The manager just shook his head, and said “make it your last”.

This story probably isn’t that funny, but it is true. There’s nothing like eating free ice cream while the rest of the farm animals around you have to pay for theirs.

Dopey, you should’ve just helped yourself.

Could not agree more with Dopey re Friendlys. I am a bona-fide Wall St db and have spent >$20k in a week on T&E, but I love keeping it real and taking my kids to he local NJ diners for breakfast. I tried Friendlys once and once only. Never ever again. Place was filthy and smelled of acrid grease, defeat and abject failure. Even my 3yr old daughter realised the place was a bio-hazard. Its not the genre that I cant do. This is very Friendlys specific. Its being a customer to someone whose product is awful and could no give a fk (its a bit like Sears Hardware but thats another story). DC conts to be best site on the web for ubcgafwsdb’s (unloved but could give a fk wall st douchebag) like me.

remember the ketchup & mustard squeeze bottles? sitting in a booth at friendly’s, my friend thought it’d be funny to lay the ketchup bottle on the table and smash it w/ a fist at me. i ducked. the ketchup hit an infant in the face in the booth next to us. the mother saw the kid and started screaming bloody hell for the manager thinking that the kid got a hold of something sharp in its mouth like a razor blade. we were dying. of course we got kicked out, but didn’t have to pay the check. ah, life unencumbered
